Christmas may be over, but winter isn't. Ice-skating in Central Park is definitely high on the list of Christmas activities, but skating continues in New York City throughout the winter. Tourists and residents alike can enjoy ice-skating in Central Park until the end of March. Plus, you won't have the holiday crowds, giving you more space to show off your skills. The park has two ice rinks, both with nighttime skating, so you can enjoy a spin around the ice with a great view of New York City's skyline. Ice-skating has taken place in Central Park since its first winter in 1858.

Wollman Rink

The Wollman Rink covers 33,000 square-feet and has been an annual addition to Central Park for over 60-years. It is the more expensive of the two rinks in Central Park, especially if you go at peak times. The rink opens everyday with late night skating until 10pm Wednesday - Thursday, and until 11pm on Saturdays. It is located near Central Park Zoo in the southeastern side of Central Park. Prices range from $5.75 - $16 depending on the time and your age. You can rent skates for $6.75. Payment can only be made with cash. The rink also offers ice-skating lessons for all ages that is taught by professional instructors. To find the rink use the Central Park South entrance at 59th Street and 6th Avenue. Several New York hotels are within walking distance of the entrance including, the Trump Tower and International Hotel, the Jumeirah Essex House, and The Sherry-Netherland.

Lasker Rink

The Lasker Rink is located midway down the northern part of Central Park. The closest entrance for this rink is 110th street and Lenox Avenue. The facility has two skating areas, one specially dedicated to hockey. You can skate everyday, with late skating until 11pm on Friday and Saturdays. Certified instructors teach group and private lessons to children and adults. Entry to skate on the rink costs $3.75 for kids and $6.75 for adults. The prices are set rates no matter what time you skate and much cheaper than the Wollman Rink. So if you are on a budget it is a better option. You can also rent skates for $6. If you happen to miss skating season and plan to visit New York City in the summer, Lasker Rink converts into a large public swimming pool. Good hotels near the entrance are limited, so a good place to find your New York City accommodation is the west side of the park, as you will also be near plenty of the city's attractions.

While New York City has done a lot in the past few years to reduce crime in Central Park, you still need to be sensible, especially after dark. Make sure you stay to well lit and heavier traffic paths when heading to the rinks. Don't forget to bring your camera to capture amazing shots of the city's skyline and lights reflecting off the ice. After your skate find a nice cafe to sit down and warm up with a coffee or hot-chocolate.
