The Swiss ballet company was formed in 1962. It uses classically trained dancers to perform contemporary choreography. The group performs works from the 20th-century under the leadership of Philippe Cohen. The 2012 performance taking place at The Joyce Theater is choreographed by Emanuel Gat. Gat combines his contemporary dance style with the music of J.S. Bach. Gat has been asked by dance companies around the world to add is unique flair to their shows.
Performances takes place Tuesday and Wednesdays at 7.30pm, Thursday to Saturday at 8pm, and on Saturday and Sunday there is a 2pm matinee. Tickets prices range from $19 - $49. Prices are very reasonable for New York City, even the top tier seats. All seats give you a good view of the stage and are comfortable, but if you want the best try and book seats in the middle of the theatre. The local area has a great choice of restaurants if you want a pre-show dinner, especially worth considering since the snack bar in the theatre is limited.
The Joyce Theater is near the Eighth Avenue L train exit. The nearest subway station is 14th Street, which is served by the A, C, and E line trains. The nearest New York hotel is the Chelsea lodge, which offers budget accommodation and is within walking distance of The Joyce. Also nearby is the Colonial House Inn, which also offers budget New York accommodation. A little further away, but still within easy reach of the theater, you will find a choice of New York luxury hotels.
Keep in mind that if you plan to go to a weekday evening performance that you will need to give yourself extra time to travel. If you plan to take a taxi, book one in advance or ask your hotel concierge for help about the best time to leave. Matinees will be easier to get to since they will avoid the times when people are getting out of work. They also cost less.
